Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gleaned this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student perusing this, it may be one of your major concerns. On my move-in day, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what is my takeaway? I learned that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly alright! There are numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, it should be authenticity. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel deficient. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you are having trouble grasping a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize during the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the onset of the school year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid stresses like exams and due dates.
