Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was preparing to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant step was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was building friendships. This undoubtedly ranks among the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting on this moment today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most valuable friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to connect with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. There are various people throughout the course and university; you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the academic workload and content complexity. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be quite challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, I can nearly assure you that there are several others who share your confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year: ask for help from both your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I indeed took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this segment of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
