Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! What insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself now?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most apprehensive parts of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student reading this, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the beginning of the term, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was a bit of casual conversation with others in similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can embrace one thing, let it be your true self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter others like yourself.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel unqualified. A few strategies aided me through that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing the same difficulty. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that others are confused as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the staff!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They desire your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year concerning our struggles. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to take full advantage of the support available. There is no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
