Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fears, and uncertainties about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons have I learned this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever had at university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I realized it’s best to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events to help you bond with others. I also learned that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find peers who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Solicit help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They show empathy toward students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the resources provided to you. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be alleviated through the various forms of support offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself even alongside the stressors like exams and deadlines.
