Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Taking such a significant step was not something my formerly timid self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I realize I have experienced a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a major concern for new university students, and if you’re considering becoming one, it might be a primary source of anxiety for you as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room the entire day, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. Now, I can affirmatively state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those experiencing similar situations. So, what did I realize? It’s beneficial to take a bold step at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities designed to facilitate connections with others. I also recognized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and complexity of the content. There was a distinct transition from A-levels and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can impact your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone shares a similar experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. Therefore, seek help. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build rapport with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to utilize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year enlightened me that feelings of nervousness concerning university are often baseless and can be lessened through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It demonstrated that I am never alone and how to embrace enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
