Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the early and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This certainly represents one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you find yourself reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester began, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to anyone. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with those in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s truly yourself. Among the vast variety of individuals across the course and campus, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a significant escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment does not always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you that others are puzzled as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next insight. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain an ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest actions you can take for your own benefit! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the variety of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never on my own, and it has demonstrated how to enjoy myself despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
