Twelve months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was creating friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and socialize. Nowadays, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. What did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the outset of the year. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being genuine is essential. With the vast array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who align with you.
An additional challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and question your capabilities. A few strategies supported me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for guidance!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is invaluable. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and this is one of the wisest decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the help offered by faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I am never alone and how to find joy amid stressors like exams and submission deadlines.
