Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my typically shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can confidently say I’ve forged some of the most amazing friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with those in akin circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, no need to fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re sure to come across individuals that share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What helped me navigate this was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar situations. If you don’t grasp a concept, there are likely many others who don’t either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and understand the challenges students endure. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had made use of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous opportunities to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never alone and have learned how to enjoy myself despite the stress from exams and deadlines.
