Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving in headfirst was not something my former shy and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back, I realize it has been an academic year rich in personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making friends. This certainly ranks among the more intimidating elements of starting university, and if you’re perusing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodations, a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room because I was too daunted to venture out and greet people. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known, right here at this university in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it only required a bit of small talk with others in the same boat. So, what’s the takeaway? I discovered that it’s always wise to make the leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker moments and events designed for engaging with others. I also realized that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. There are a multitude of unique individuals across the program and university; you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the workload and the level of difficulty of the content. There was undeniably a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel as though you don’t measure up. There were several things that helped me through that sensation, one being the important reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If something isn’t clear, I can almost assure you there are at least a few others who also have questions. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your peers and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students experience struggles. They relate to us and keep lines of communication open throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps— I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My main insight from this part of university life is to leverage the support that’s made available to you. You can never receive too much help!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be alleviated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
