Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of joy! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was establishing friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student perusing this, it may be a considerable concern for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with peers. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a variety of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet like-minded people.
An additional challenge was the demands of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being thrust into such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel less competent. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to prosper and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy toward students and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking risks earlier – I took one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have an excess of it!
In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
