Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was set to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not a scenario my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart on me, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was the task of making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room because I felt too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was participating in casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take the first step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be abundant ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of people across the program and campus, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge I needed to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and in some respects, an even steeper transition from the first term to the second. Being plunged into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel as if you’re falling short. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation; one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggle. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are at least several others who also don’t get it. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to our struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are mostly unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I’m never alone, and it has taught me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
