Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is often one of the most daunting, and if you are a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the semester starting, I remained confined to my room all day, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends here at university and in my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you interact with others. Also, if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals within the course and university, you’re sure to find likeminded people.

Another hurdle was the workload and the challenges of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was the realization that everyone is experiencing the same situation. If there’s something you struggle with, I can almost assure you others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from peers and staff!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and understand that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking risks before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to fully utilize the help that is available. You can never have enough!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxiety related to university is frequently unfounded and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun in spite of stressors like exams and deadlines.
