By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, this may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I remained in my room the whole day, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say I have made some wonderful friends here at university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I realized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you feel unprepared, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, I learned that being true to yourself is important. With a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who share your mindset.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was clearly a transition from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. What aided me was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, chances are others are too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and keep constant communication with us regarding our challenges. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking risks – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to become acquainted with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
