Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to begin my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be one of your major concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always most beneficial. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate your connections with others. I also came to understand that if you can be anything, be genuine. There are countless diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel less capable. A few strategies assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who’re also confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the initial year. Don’t hesitate to request help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They connect with students and keep ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke of taking risks at the beginning; I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is tremendously beneficial. There are many avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to fully embrace the support offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased through the various support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
