Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something that my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the finest friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with a bit of small talk with those in comparable situations. So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking a bold step at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities and events to break the ice and help you connect with others. I’ve also learned that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the demanding workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the difficulties students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I referenced taking leaps before—I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the help that is provided. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are commonly unfounded and can be mitigated by the multiple support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the stressors like exams and deadlines.
