Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see an academic year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a tremendous amount of enjoyment! So, what have I gleaned from this year, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and for any prospective student reading this, it may rank as one of your greatest worries. On my first day moving into my dorm, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to step out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with light conversation with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be plenty of social events to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can weigh heavily on your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me cope with this, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing similar feelings. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally lost. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had started much earlier. I previously referred to taking risks – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can undertake for yourself! My significant takeaway from this part of university life is to utilize the support that’s available. You can never have too much assistance!

All in all, this year has made me realize that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has taught me how to relish my time despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
