Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of starting university, and if you find yourself reading this as a prospective student, it may be among your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet others. Sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody anything, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me through that sentiment, one being the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can nearly guarantee that others are grappling with the same issue. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This transitions me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unsubstantiated and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
