By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what lessons has this year brought me, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of embarking on university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be your primary concern. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Today, however, I can proudly say I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I learned? I learned that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, just be yourself. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to find your tribe.

Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate those feelings, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something seems unclear, I can almost assure you others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty for support!

This leads me to the next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I embraced one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role provided me with the opportunity to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your well-being! My key takeaway from this university experience is to seize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has revealed to me how to find enjoyment amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
