Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I learned, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most daunting aspects of beginning university, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day in my room, far too nervous to emerge and meet others. Now, though, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I realized it’s vital to take initiative at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an escalation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can affect your self-confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If something is unclear, I can virtually assure you others are equally perplexed. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the singularly most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the struggles students face. They relate to us and maintain open communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I did make one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to make the most of the help available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, whether before or during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated with the support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never isolated and has taught me how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
