Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved personality was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the primary and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This aspect of beginning university is often one of the most frightening, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry. On my first day settling into my accommodations, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, daunted by the thought of stepping out and introducing myself. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships here at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all started with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I come to understand? It’s beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events available to help you connect with others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the program and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase compared to A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you may notice others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies assisted me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial capability to develop during your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the assistance provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has illustrated that I am never alone and has shown me how to find joy despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
