Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of beginning my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be a primary concern for you. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively claim I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking the initiative at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be your authentic self. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few factors aided me in overcoming that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you encounter something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are confused as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to master in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative. This role enabled me to become acquainted with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the opportunities for assistance that are presented to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
