In October 2022, ten months ago, I was besieged by nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embarking on this new venture was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back on the preceding academic year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, challenges, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This undeniably ranks among the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may rank high on your list of worries. On my first day of moving into accommodations, prior to the term starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, feeling too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with light conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that at the beginning of the year, taking a chance is always advantageous. If you’re not feeling prepared or relaxed, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also found that being authentic is the most effective strategy. With so many varied individuals in the course and at the university, you’re likely to encounter those who share your interests.
Another hurdle was coping with the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things assisted me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something confounds you, I can nearly guarantee others are struggling too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and academic staff!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire your success and understand the hurdles that students encounter. They show empathy and keep lines of communication open throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it is one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the resources provided. You can never access too much support!
In conclusion, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated through the various support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary and how to relish my experiences despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
