Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and withdrawn self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step outside and meet new people. However, reflecting on my experience today, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships of my life, both here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and everything initiated with casual conversations with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is consistently advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one principle, be authentic. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are certain to find like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was indeed a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment doesn’t always boost your self-confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something unclear, I can almost assure you there are others who are equally confused. Therefore, request assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek support from your classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role allowed me to build rapport with the faculty members, which is tremendously valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the support being provided. You can never have an excess of it!

In a broader sense, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, whether preceding or during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated by the multitude of support avenues accessible from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to have fun alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines.
