Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was ready for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was building friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a major worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. However, today I can assert that I’ve developed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to help you engage with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to find those who click with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a jump from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can strain your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that others are too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most important lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize the difficulties students face. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this aspect of university is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much!

Generally, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has revealed how to enjoy myself alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
