Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I realize it has been a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what has this past year taught me, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the most daunting parts of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your major worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and engage with others. However, as I sit here today, I can proudly share that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university and through this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was starting casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With so many diverse individuals throughout the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in several respects, a more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such a setting is not always easy for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me in combating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares your struggles. If something isn’t clear to you, I can virtually guarantee that several others are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand that students face challenges. They resonate with our experiences and keep in touch with us consistently throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke of taking leaps at the start; I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance being extended to you. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to embrace enjoyment alongside challenges such as exams and deadlines.
