Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was prepared for. Looking back on the past academic year, I view it as a path of personal growth, hurdles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was socializing. This is frequently one of the most terrifying elements of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On the initial day of moving into my accommodation, merely days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day isolated in my room, too frightened to step out and meet others. Now, I can proudly say that I have formed some of the best friendships at this university and within my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous icebreaker activities aimed at helping you connect with others. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and campus, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a higher expectation compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What got me through was the acknowledgment that everyone experiences the same situation. If you struggle with something, I can almost assure you that others do as well. So, do not hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This naturally leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke previously about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the wide range of support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
