Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature had encountered. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was making new friends. This aspect of starting university can be quite daunting, and if you are reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the semester commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Yet, as I sit here today, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with striking up casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also learned that, if you can choose one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the increase in workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable advancement from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting isn’t always easy for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t understand, I can almost guarantee there are others who share your confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Turn to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely desire you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took a significant step at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can undertake for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance that is available. You can never have too much support!
In general, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the various support resources offered by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment in my life despite pressures from exams and deadlines.
