Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self had experienced. Looking back on the previous academic year, I recognize a journey of personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most daunting challenges was establishing friendships. This is certainly one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my initial day settling into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the full day secluded in my room, too intimidated to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, beginning with casual conversations with others in similar positions. So, what have I learned? I came to realize that taking a chance at the onset of the year is crucial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breaking and events aimed at connecting with others. I also discovered that if there is one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always favorable for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me during those times, one being the reminder that everyone is in the identical situation. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly guarantee that there are others who also don’t understand. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most vital lesson to learn in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and keep in regular contact with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it’s definitely one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My main lesson from this facet of university life is to exploit the support that is available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be eased with the various support options offered by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy even amidst pressures like examinations and deadlines.
