Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the cusp of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of starting university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, daunted by the prospect of meeting new individuals. Today, I can confidently assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what was my takeaway? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the onset of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and the university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded peers.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging to your self-esteem; you might feel inferior in comparison to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares this experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Request help from fellow students and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully capitalize on the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position helped me connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the available support from staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone and have learned to enjoy myself despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
