Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was the task of making new friends. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary concerns. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve found a supportive community here at Imperial, and it all started with engaging in casual conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I gain from this? I discovered that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of opportunities for ice-breaking and events that will assist you in connecting with peers. I also learned that if there’s one thing to embrace, it’s being yourself. With the diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly an elevation from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me during those moments, one being the reminder that everyone faces similar challenges. If a concept eludes you, I can almost assure you there are several others who are just as confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your classmates and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show understanding towards students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative at the year’s start. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are myriad opportunities to become familiar with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this university experience is to grasp the assistance that’s available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often misplaced and can be eased through the range of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
