Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embarking on such a journey was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and an abundance of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is certainly among the more daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re viewing this as a prospective student, it might be one of your major worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly say that I’ve cultivated some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the workload and complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even greater. Being thrown into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things helped me navigate this feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can almost assure you others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to prosper and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to establish connections with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
