Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. As I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student, stepping into unfamiliar territory was unfamiliar territory for my previously reserved self. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This is often a considerable source of anxiety for new university students, and for those considering enrollment, it may be a significant worry. On the inaugural day of moving into my residence, merely days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day confined to my room, feeling too daunted to interact with others. Today, I can assert with confidence that I have forged some of the best friendships of my life at this university and within this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with brief discussions with peers in comparable circumstances. So, what wisdom have I gathered? I discovered that taking a brave step at the start of the year is beneficial. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! Numerous ice-breaking chances and events will facilitate connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional obstacle was navigating the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive environment can strain your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies aided my journey, one being the reminder that everyone is sharing the same experience. If something confounds you, I can fairly assure you that others are equally perplexed. Thus, reach out for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Seek guidance from both your peers and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. Their desire for your success is evident, and they appreciate the struggles students face. They show support and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, yet I wish I had done so earlier. As I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did indeed take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to establish connections with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it is one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this element of university life is to embrace the assistance provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy amid challenges such as examinations and deadlines.
