Around ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Engaging with the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did this year bring me, and where do I find myself now?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This can be among the most daunting facets of commencing university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be your chief concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. What have I learned? It’s essential to take that initial leap at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking occasions to facilitate connections with others. I also came to understand that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter those who align with you.

Another hurdle was the academic workload and difficulty of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. What aided me was the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something eludes your understanding, chances are others are struggling as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most important lesson of the first year. Ask for help from both peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain open lines of communication about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one by serving as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to seize the opportunities for assistance offered. You can never have too much support!

In conclusion, this year has taught me that feelings of apprehension, both before and during university, are often misguided and can be mitigated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never truly alone and has shown me how to find enjoyment amid pressures such as exams and deadlines.
