Authored by Dawson La, Master in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Just ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was familiar with. Upon reflection, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a potential student, it might be your major concern. On my initial day moving into my residence, days ahead of the term start, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too frightened to step out and introduce myself. Today, though, I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a little conversation with others in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found out that if you can be anything, be genuine. With so many diverse individuals across the course and the university, you’re sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another significant challenge was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel less capable. Several factors helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others are feeling the same. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to embrace in the first year. Request help from both your colleagues and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They are invested in your success and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogue throughout the year about our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances—I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never receive too much!

In general, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the various support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
