Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with trepidation, anxiety, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and withdrawn demeanor was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This tends to be one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student perusing this, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my initial day moving into my housing, just days prior to the start of the semester, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships here at the university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all originated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I concluded? It’s advantageous to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that embracing your true self is vital. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who connect with you.

Another difficulty was the volume and complexity of the workload. There was a significant transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the recognition that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to absorb in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing dialogue with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the support available until late in the year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s amongst the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never receive too much!

Ultimately, this year has imparted to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support accessible from faculty and fellow students. I’ve understood that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
