Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it can be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to go out and meet others. Today, I can proudly say I have made some of the finest friends here at university and in my program. I have discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized it’s important to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that authenticity matters. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you are sure to find people who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the workload and the challenge of the course content. There was a distinct increase from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being part of such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you struggle with a concept, there are likely others who feel likewise. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for support from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges students endure. They relate to us and keep in constant touch throughout the year regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway is to seize the opportunity for the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never isolated and taught me how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
