Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty as I embarked on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal growth, hurdles, and enjoyment. What insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial hurdles was forging friendships, a daunting element of entering university. On the first day of moving into my residence, I remained in my room all day, feeling too overwhelmed to connect with others. Presently, I’ve formed incredible friendships here, creating a second family at Imperial. It began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is crucial. If you’re hesitant, there are numerous ice-breaker events available. Just be yourself, and you’ll discover like-minded individuals.
Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material, which was a significant upgrade from A-levels and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. It’s common to feel like you’re falling short, but remember, everyone shares this experience. If something confounds you, it’s likely others are struggling too. Seek assistance from your peers and faculty; it’s vital during your first year.
The faculty within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced by students, keeping open lines of communication about various issues. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until later on but wish I had taken advantage sooner. I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to bond with the staff. There are countless opportunities to engage with faculty, which is invaluable. Make the most of the support available; there’s no limit to how much you can benefit!
This year has shown me that feelings of nervousness regarding university are often unfounded and can be eased through support from both faculty and fellow students. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
