By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize personal development, numerous challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?
One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of moving into accommodations, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Currently, I can proudly assert that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I come to understand? It’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel ready or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaker activities designed to assist in connecting with others. I also discovered that being genuine is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals across the program and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and an even steeper transition from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and question your own capabilities. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, there are probably others in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This could be the most vital lesson during your first year. Reach out to both classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want to see you succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did so by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have too much guidance!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
