Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back, I realize I experienced a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

One of the early and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome facets of starting university, and if you’re exploring this as a potential student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, reflecting on my experience today, I can assert that I’ve made some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I discovered? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker events and activities to help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and university, you’re certainly bound to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable advancement from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always favorable for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same challenges as you. If you’re struggling with something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who don’t grasp it either. Therefore, ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and appreciate that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had accessed it sooner. I mentioned taking risks at the outset – I indeed embraced one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is exceedingly beneficial. There are myriad ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My principal insight in this arena of university life is to capitalize on the resources at your disposal. You can never have too much help!

Ultimately, this year has imparted the wisdom that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be soothed by the plethora of support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has illustrated how to savor my experiences amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
