Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did this year provide, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most frightening aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first moving day into my accommodation, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, starting with casual conversations with people in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is incredibly advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t stress! There will be ample ice-breaker opportunities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to discover individuals who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others find it perplexing as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students face difficulties. They sympathize with students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year concerning our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I did take one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to become familiar with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this area of university life is to capitalize on the assistance offered. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has imparted on me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support options available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has revealed to me how to have fun despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
