Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Facing the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I realize it has been a journey of personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluding myself in my room, too daunted to step out and meet people. Today, though, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here in this university and program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to help you bond with others. I also learned that if you must be one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. What guided me through this was the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you encounter something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. So, ask for assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students experience. They resonate with our concerns and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the help available. You can never have an excessive amount!
Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the diverse support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and taught me how to enjoy myself amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
