Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh student. Embarking on this unfamiliar journey was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was prepared for. Reflecting on the academic year, I recognize it as a time of personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This undoubtedly ranks as one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you find yourself reading this as a future student, it could be your greatest worry. On my first day moving into my residence, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room out of intimidation to go out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I have forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with making casual conversation with individuals in similar circumstances as mine. So, what did I discern? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also recognized that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s yourself. With so many diverse individuals in the program and at the university, you are sure to meet people akin to you.
Another challenge I had to navigate was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can sometimes be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me tackle that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience as you. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that several others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for help from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware that students face difficulties. They are sympathetic to students’ struggles and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did make one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is an incredibly beneficial thing to do. There are numerous avenues to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s surely one of the most advantageous steps you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway from this particular aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much support!
Overall, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both in anticipation of and throughout university, are almost always unfounded and can be eased by the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and has guided me on how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
