Recently, I reached the milestone of nine months living in London. Although this may not seem extensive, I have gained a wealth of knowledge. The city is lively, not only due to its wide array of living arrangements but also its vibrant communities. Students are presented with a plethora of options. Both student residences and private housing provide amenities such as ensuite and suite bathrooms, private and shared rooms, studio flats, and house shares. Local students can easily schedule apartment visits, while international students can explore sites like Rightmove, Zoopla, or SpareRoom to check out potential residences online, review amenities, and discover public transport links.
In my search for a residence, I aimed for a room in Central London to stay near prominent attractions, bustling social areas, and Imperial’s campus. The city is segmented into six zones, with the first two zones being the most central. London’s transportation system is remarkable, offering the underground (tube), buses, and trains, which simplify moving around and travelling between zones. I intended to lower travel expenses since moving between zones can incur charges as high as £5.25 daily. I opted to walk short distances instead of using a bus or tube. Nevertheless, oyster card options have reduced commuting costs for university travel. Moreover, London Overground and National Rail services reach areas beyond the Underground network, covering regions outside central London. Fares for inter-zone travel on these services vary depending on the distance traveled and the fare policies of each train company. The high living expenses in Central London are influenced by the significant attractions present. Thankfully, I attended university with a friend, and we shared a room, which considerably cut down our rent. I favored intercollegiate student accommodations to connect with peers from varied backgrounds within the same age group, a combination that is more difficult to find in private rentals.
Being near grocery stores was important to me. Common supermarket chains include Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op; more economical options are Aldi, Lidl, and Iceland. Being close to essential stores like supermarkets and pharmacies saves valuable time on errands, particularly during exam periods.
Selecting a neighborhood is a daunting task. The diverse ethnic communities in London are vital to its cultural tapestry, creating varied neighborhoods. Numerous international students seek to find a touch of home in London. Southall, located in West London, boasts a significant South Asian community with Indian eateries, grocery shops, and traditional clothing stores. Brixton, situated in South London, is celebrated for its Afro-Caribbean populace and dynamic music culture. Chinatown in the West End is a hub for Chinese dining, shopping, and cultural activities. These are just a selection of community-focused neighborhoods.
The ideal locations to reside in London are contingent on individual interests and needs. As you search for a new residence in London, immerse yourself in the diversity and richness of its living choices, discover cultural enclaves, and appreciate the convenience and vibrancy of this incredible city.
