By Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was poised to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Leaping into the unknown was not an experience my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I can see a year rich in personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more unnerving parts of beginning university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On the day I moved into my accommodations, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this program. I have cultivated a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating small conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to help you bond with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be yourself. With such a diverse population across the program and the campus, you’re bound to meet individuals like you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They relate to student struggles and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly make use of the supportive services until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I talked about taking leaps previously – I took one at the year’s onset by becoming a year wellness representative. This role helped me connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best investments you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university facet is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased by the numerous support mechanisms provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and submission deadlines.
