Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, apprehensive, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into unfamiliar territory wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more challenging elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it might be one of your greatest concerns. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent a whole day secluded in my room because I felt too daunted to venture out and greet others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had, both here at this university and within this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and all it took was striking up some casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you aren’t feeling quite ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and university, you are sure to meet people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I needed to navigate was the demands of the coursework and the difficulty level. Transitioning from A-levels was undoubtedly significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes shake your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel as though you fall short. A few strategies helped me cope with this feeling, one being the assurance that everyone is experiencing something similar. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee that there are at least a few others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from both fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is outstanding. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I did take one by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year at the beginning of the year. This role allowed me to form connections with the faculty members, which is tremendously valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s truly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My main lesson from this particular aspect of university life is to seize the help being offered. You can never have too much guidance!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated by the numerous support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
