Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize this past year was filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be among your top worries. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step out and meet new people. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best route. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker chances and events will allow you to connect with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing to be, it’s true to yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals in the course and university, you’re bound to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and it was, in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are equally baffled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in the first year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your peers and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with the staff, and it’s definitely one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the available assistance. You can never have enough!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated by the wide array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
