Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days prior to the semester commencing, I confined myself to my room the whole day, too apprehensive to emerge and introduce myself to anyone. Today, however, I can proudly state that I have created some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all by engaging in small conversations with those in comparable situations. So, what did I uncover? I discovered that taking a chance at the commencement of the year is essential. If you aren’t prepared or feel uneasy, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that being true to yourself is vital. With such a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re destined to discover like-minded companions.
Another hurdle was balancing the workload and grappling with content difficulty. There was a marked increase compared to A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can be taxing on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear, it’s likely that others may be struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and comprehend the hurdles students confront. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until the close of the academic year, but I regret not doing so sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best steps you can take for your benefit! My primary takeaway is to make the most of the support available. You can never have an excess of guidance!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased by the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
