By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize this year has been filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days before the semester started, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too fearful to emerge and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships here at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I gain? I learned that taking a plunge at the beginning of the year is essential. If you aren’t ready or feeling comfortable, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker activities to facilitate your connections with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your interests.

Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a drastic shift from A-levels, and even more so from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you might witness others studying and feel inferior. What aided me was the reminder that everyone experiences the same challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from peers and staff!

This brings me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and understand the challenges that students encounter. They show empathy and keep open lines of communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t fully engage the pastoral support until the academic year was concluding, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did take a significant one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

In summary, this year has demonstrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the available support from faculty and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst challenges such as exams and deadlines.
