Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. As I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This typically represents one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you’re a future student reading this, it may be one of your biggest worries. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days before the term started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. Sitting here now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you interact with others. I also discovered that if you can embrace one quality, it’s to be true to yourself. With a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; one might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If something confuses you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who share the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the foremost essential lesson to learn during the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking leaps earlier, and I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with staff members, which proves to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to become acquainted with the faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. One can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unwarranted and can be alleviated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m not alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment despite pressure from exams and deadlines.
