Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?

One of the earliest and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of commencing university, and if you are a potential student, it may be a significant worry for you. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet anyone. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had while here at university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was striking up casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I discover? I realized that it’s advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also found that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial skill you learn in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This segues into my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students face. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I did take one at the year’s start by becoming a wellbeing representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can’t have too much help!

In summary, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased with the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has made me realize that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
